🍔 January 31st: The First Capitalist Hamburger Behind the Iron Curtain

🍔 The Price of a Taste A single Big Mac cost 3.75 rubles. This amounted to 2.5% of the average Soviet worker's monthly salary (approx. 150 rubles). For context, a monthly bus pass cost only 3 rubles.

The Arrival (1990) On this day, January 31, 1990, the first McDonald's in the Soviet Union opened its doors in Pushkin Square, Moscow. At the time, it was the largest McDonald's location in the world.

Over 30,000 Muscovites stood in lines stretching for kilometers just to taste their first Big Mac. The very first customers were children from local orphanages, who were served free hamburgers. From this day on, the Soviet Union began to teeter, and it dissolved approximately two years later.

And 32 Years Later...

The Departure (2022) On March 14, 2022, the "Golden Arches," the iconic yellow M symbol of McDonald's, were taken down. History repeated itself in a tragic irony: over 30,000 Muscovites once again stood in lines stretching for kilometers—this time, to taste their last Big Mac.
