📝 February 4th: The White Palace and the Broken Peninsula

📝 The Tsar's Summer Retreat The "Livadia Palace," overlooking the Black Sea in Yalta, Crimea, was the summer villa of Russia's last emperor, Nicholas II. Finished in white limestone, the palace radiated the elegance of Neo-Renaissance architecture.

The President's Agonizing Journey To reach this place, U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt endured a grueling journey. He traveled 7,812 km by ship from Newport, Virginia to Malta in the Mediterranean, flew another 2,200 km by plane, and finally endured a six-hour drive over 130 km of rough roads. For the frail President, who relied on a wheelchair due to his illness, this journey was one of excruciating pain.

The Tragic Deal (February 4, 1945) On this day, February 4, 1945, Roosevelt, having arrived in Yalta with such difficulty, Under the grand chandeliers of Livadia Palace, they toasted to "peace."

📝 1. The Division of Germany It was agreed that defeated Nazi Germany would be carved up and occupied by four powers: the United States, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union. Even the capital, Berlin, was split into four sectors. This arrangement became the origin of the division between East Germany (Soviet-controlled) and West Germany (controlled by the US, UK, and France).

2. The Fate of Korea Roosevelt urgently requested Stalin to enter the war against Japan. Stalin accepted, demanding Southern Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands in return. Because of this secret deal, Soviet troops stormed into the northern part of the Korean Peninsula in August 1945. Alarmed by the rapid Soviet advance, the United States hastily drew the 38th Parallel, a decision that became the decisive moment for Korea's division.

3. The Betrayal of Poland Stalin promised to hold "free elections" in Poland, but it was a lie. Result: Poland and other Eastern European nations eventually degenerated into Soviet satellite states (the Communist Bloc). In essence, Churchill and Roosevelt had practically handed Eastern Europe over to Stalin on a silver platter.
